Soft Hyphen

A soft hyphen (also called discretionary hyphen, syllable hyphen, or shy) is used to specify a possible line break within a word. If the word is wrapped, a hyphen appears at the end of the line. If the word is not wrapped, the soft hyphen remains invisible in the web browser.

Special Features in Drupal CMS

  • Unlike the original HTML character -&-s-h-y-;-, the Drupal CMS uses the placeholder: {—}.
  • This allows long words to be provided with hidden hyphens that are only displayed if there is not enough space.

Use Cases

  • The special character for the soft hyphen can be used in all elements, e.g. in headings or body text.
  • There are no restrictions for use within the CMS.

Note: The soft hyphen helps improve the readability of long words without hyphens always being visible.
